MERCURY, THE WINGED MESSENGER

Preliminar Study | Watercolor, pastel, and gold leaf on paper. 33 x 24 cm.

This piece is inspired by Gustav Holst’s magnificent musical work. With Mercury, I explored the theme of **communication** through the **sign**, understood semantically—the essence of all human thought. The gold leaf elements represent the **transcendent** ✨, that which escapes our material reality and becomes eternal: the message itself. Mercury, the messenger god, generates the vertical symmetry, which is broken by the flowing, temporal cadence of the golden script. It is the rhythmic unfolding of the message, received both visually and through time, resonating within the spatiotemporal context of life. It's communication. It’s rhythm. It’s an eternal sign. --- **What message do you receive when you look at this piece? Let me know in the comments!** 👇

The Planets series is a saga of works inspired by the musical works of Gustav Holst. In the case of Mercury, the winged messenger, I approached the theme through the use of the sign, understood semiotically. The sign is the quintessence of communication; all human thought moves within its boundaries. In my work, the sign acquires the relevance of the transcendent, of that which escapes our material reality. The sign is an essential part of communication, but it is also a source of beauty. The sign is communication and rhythm itself; it is a way of transmitting the unfolding of the message, which is received both visually and through time. The message has a temporal unfolding, a cadence that occurs temporally and is reasoned within the spatiotemporal context of life. Mercury is the bearer of the message, and the succession of golden rhythms that form characters generate horizontal planes in the work. The god generates the symmetrical vertical, which is broken by the becoming and the cadence of the gold of the transcendent, of that which escapes our materiality and becomes eternal: the message.
