THE NYMPH AND THE FAUN

Watercolor on paper | 32x22 cm.

In this work, I visually address dualities. First, the concept of the feminine and the masculine, as opposites. I don't mean that men and women are opposites, but rather, I refer to duality as opposition. Likewise, desire and resistance: the fauns seek out the nymphs to satisfy their desires, while the nymphs tend to avoid these situations. Also, the brutality of the faun contrasts with the fragility of the nymph. Another duality I believe is found in the work is that which refers to the carnal and the spiritual: the faun thinks solely on the biological plane of desire, while the nymph, as a free being, thinks about the self-determination of her will. Thus, dualities emerge: feminine-masculine, desire-resistance, brutality-fragility, carnality-spirituality, and in this same way, several more can be constructed on a single work that appears classic but seeks to address current themes. These dualities are very present today in very diverse situations and are the subject of constant social debate, at least in my country. That's why I was interested in approaching it visually. The inclusion of gold as a reference to transcendence, to the fact that the mythological scene is taken on a supra-terrestrial plane, a world of ideas beyond what happens to the senses.
